Having a population between 50.000 and 1 million people, I-Cities generally play a primary role in connecting important rural and urban areas to basic facilities and services. Owing to the relations created with metropolises, they are able to compliment other cities and run as a system of cities, particularly in developed countries.

UCLG was created in 2004 as an inheritor of the century-old International Municipal Movement, to represent and defend the interests of local governments on the world stage. With its 9 sections in across the world, UCLG has more than 1000 direct members from 160 countries, representing more than half of the world population.
